‘The best market in Britain’ Observer Food Monthly

This book is a beautiful celebration of a way of shopping and eating that proves there's an alternative to the supermarket. With contributions from Borough market stallholders such as Randolph Hodgson of Neal's Yard Dairy and the chefs who shop there, including John Torode, Rose Gray and Antonio Carluccio, it captures the personalities and the produce that make Borough the unique place that it is.

From London’s "best kept secret" to being voted "The best market in Britain" by Observer Food Monthly magazine, the Borough Market’s renaissance has been a fascinating journey of rediscovery.

Known today as a bustling retail food market that prides itself on its quality and diversity of produce, for much of the last century the Market was known as a thriving wholesale fruit and vegetable market. For over a thousand years a market has been present here on the south side of London Bridge in the Borough of Southwark providing sustenance for Londoner’s and citizens of the south east of England, and a back drop to some of London’s most colourful history.
The Borough Market Book celebrates what can be achieved when people, place and politics collaborate to bring to market the highest standards and stands as a clarion call for market’s throughout Britain.

Reflecting the diversity and quality of the Market itself, the Borough Market Book has been written and photographed by a discerning team of contributors:

Ptolemy Dean is a Trustee of Borough Market, an architect and a presenter on the BBC’s Restoration he writes on the history of the market and it’s architectural heritage.

Sheila Dillon presents BBC Radio 4's The Food Programme and writes on the politics of food.

Henrietta Green is the country’s leading expert on Britain’s speciality food producers, founded the first Food Lovers' Fairs and writes on the produce available in the Market.

Dominic Murphy is the Green Consumer columnist for The Guardian and writes on where the produce comes from.

The recipes have been provided by Roast, a new restaurant to open soon in the Borough Market which will serve as a showcase for Britain’s finest, seasonal produce.

The photography has all been shot by Jason Lowe.

The Borough Market Book satisfies the increasing appetite that consumers now have for fine food.
